Paranormal Update with Jennifer Spees
Do You Love a Good Ghost Story?

I've always loved ghost stories, and judging from the popularity of The Ghost Whisperer and movies like Pulse, a lot of you do too! So many of you sent in heartfelt stories in response to our psychic stories contest. I'm sharing two of my favorites in this edition of the Paranormal Update.

Share Your True Ghost Story!

I'm very excited to announce our next contest—true ghost stories! This time we have a special guest judge for our contest—J. Allan Danelek, author of The Case for Ghosts and Mystery of Reincarnation. He's spent years researching all manner of ghostly phenomena and raises some intriguing questions about the nature of ghosts and hauntings, and how and why they manifest in the "real" world. He will be reading your true ghost stories and picking his five favorites. The five lucky winners will each receive a signed copy of The Case for Ghosts. To enter, send your true ghost story to paranormalupdate@llewellyn.com.

Tune in to Coast to Coast AM this Monday night for some great ghost talk!

J. Allan Danelek will also be the featured guest on the Coast to Coast AM with George Noory this Monday night (or very early Tuesday morning, depending on where you live). He'll be talking about ghosts and hauntings as well as another enduring afterlife mystery: reincarnation. Don't miss the most fascinating three hours of paranormal-themed radio you're likely to hear all year! Check the Coast to Coast AM radio website at www.coasttocoastam.com for more details. You can even listen to streaming audio on the site, or check out an archived version of the September 4 show if you're heading back to work or school on Tuesday morning and can't stay up late.

True Stories of Your Psychic Experiences

Thank you to everyone who entered the psychic stories contest! I received so many great stories from Paranormal Update readers. Here are two of my favorites. I'll be sharing more in future updates as well.

Danger Ahead

I have always had weird experiences, such as knowing when the phone was going to ring and who was on the other end. I have also had some prophetic dreams throughout my life, and so have my mother and grandmother. In 2001, I had a waking vision of a severe car accident, but I dismissed it as an overactive imagination. About a week later I was on vacation when suddenly I felt like something major was about to happen.

I saw the entire scenario in my mind right before I wrecked. The accident left me quadriplegic. I have now recovered about 85% of my physical ability. Since then, I have had many visions and premonitions, but don't realize it until after the actual incident happens. I'm trying to learn to use this ability effectively, because I have a very strong feeling that I am supposed to use this to help others.  I have been through a lot of spiritual changes within the last five years, but I know what happened was meant to be in order to fulfill my life's mission. I would love to understand this part of myself.

A Dream Come True

My husband and I suffered through the agony of several miscarriages. We went through extensive fertility testing, none of which revealed the reasons for the miscarriages. After the third miscarriage, my husband had a dream in which he saw a beautiful young woman wearing a skirt, sitting on a stool. He wondered why he wasn't romantically attracted to her, and realized with amazement that she was his daughter! I took this as a sign that we should keep trying to have a child, but I had another miscarriage. I decided to stop trying and wait for a year or so before looking into the possibility of adoption.

Much to my dismay, I became pregnant again. From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I was so angry that I would have to go through yet another miscarriage! One night soon after I found out, I had a dream. It was very clear, without the typical jumbled dream plot. I was sitting next to my great-grandmother (who passed on when I was 11). She gave me a tiny pink cardigan sweater that she had crocheted. In the dream all my senses were heightened: I could feel the soft texture of the sweater, colors were brighter, and everything was suffused with a soft glow. I could feel the tangible warmth of Granny's love and happiness radiating from her. I woke from the dream afraid to hope, but no longer angry.

The months passed, and I carried my daughter to full term. Through the years I have felt comforted by my husband's vision, knowing that she will make it safely through her childhood to become the woman he saw in his dream. Our beautiful baby girl is now a teenager, and she has recently expanded her tomboy wardrobe to include skirts!

A Retrospective Look at the Supernatural
by J. Allan Danelek

Setting out to write a book about ghosts is not so much a labor of love as it is a voyage of self discovery, for the subject can hardly be broached without asking some very difficult and important questions having to do with immortality, God and what really happens to us when we die. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that it is frequently difficult to find a book on the subject that attempts to touch upon each of these areas in any depth, which was the reason I felt compelled to write The Case for Ghosts.

Unlike most books on the subject, I wanted to do more than merely pen another collection of anecdotal stories and case studies. I hoped, instead, to demonstrate that ghosts are not something to be afraid of, though they need to be respected and taken seriously, but that they are something quite natural, important and integral to our world. I also hope to impress upon the reader that they are not figments of our imagination; ghosts are as real as the flesh-and-blood people we deal with everyday, and every bit as human. Which is why, in studying them, we can recognize that we are not dealing with something alien and "spooky," but are simply interacting with people who no longer possess a physical nature, yet still require our understanding, our patience and our compassion if they are ever to find their way home. In other words, in dealing with ghosts we are simply dealing with people in another context, and that, I think, is the key to understanding these extra-worldly visitors.

An excerpt from Grave's End
by Elaine Mercado

In the early fall of l982 my husband and I were on our way to look at what was apparently the last affordable house in Brooklyn, New York. We'd been house-hunting for over a year and were very anxious to settle into a home of our own.

At this point in time we were still living in a three-room apartment with our two daughters. Our landlord was extremely frugal with the heat, and we were growing tired of huddling in our living room near a portable heater. We were willing to look at virtually any house within our price range, but we had only a small sum of money available for a down payment. Real-estate agents took us from house to house, showing us lovely homes that, unfortunately, required substantial deposits.

We thought we were permanently stymied until we noticed this one house on their listing. It had been there for over two years, but no one had attempted to show it to us.

"It's too old and too much trouble," one of the brokers said, barely looking up at us, "although you might actually be able to afford this one." The sarcasm in her voice was duly noted. However, we were undaunted by her negative description of the house. We wanted to see it.

So, there we were, full of anticipation, parking our car on this very ordinary block. I was in a very "up" mood that day, partly because I had hopes this would be "the" house, partly because it was fall. September and October had always been my favorite months. The smell of cool air and the vision of trees painted in glowing hues of orange and red and yellow signaled the upcoming holiday season. This particular block had many trees, all colored so vibrantly that the whole area had a beautiful orange cast to it. Newly fallen leaves were gathered in bunches near most of the houses and they crunched beneath our feet as we walked to our latest prospect. I thought of pumpkin pie and chestnuts, and my heart leapt at the thought that perhaps, at last, we had found a house we could actually purchase. Maybe we could even spend Christmas there. I had to stop myself from skipping toward our destination.

As we were walking down the street, I noticed an unusual tree. Not only were its leaves a strikingly colored mixture of orange and red, but it appeared to be almost caressing the house in front of which it was planted. Its trunk was tilted toward the house, with almost no branches extending toward the street. Its branches and foliage sprung out like long arms, almost protectively. When we realized this was the tree in front of the house we were to look at, I felt an unusual sense of peace. I was, without obvious reason, very glad this wonderful, strong tree would be part of the package. I didn't know then that this house, indeed, needed whatever protection it could get.
