I usually took two to three weeks off in July to help organize the Oregon Country Fair. The Manager was flexing his powers and informed me that I could have a three day weekend. This dialog followed:

Me; I'll be gone for three weeks
Him; You can have Friday off
Me; I'll be gone three weeks
Him; I'm not giving you permission.
Me; I'm not asking for permission.
Him; dumbfounded blank stare

I side stepped his power. This only works if you are willing to be fired. I wasn't fired but I kept my gloating to myself and the management gave me new respect.

On the brighter side, this recent article from the On Religion section of the NY Times shows the growing acceptance of Paganism: Paganism, Just Another Religion for Military and Academia http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/31/us/31religion.html

got a response from Limited (I presume a parent company) that of course they don't discriminate in any way and cannot comment on ongoing litigation.
fie on them...they lost me when they discontinued Sandalwood Rose, anyway.

I had a similar experience, myself. This past Samhain, I was planning on going back to my hometown for an observance with my fellow pagans.
I requested the weekend off three weeks in advance and I still found myself scheduled during the time I requested off.
I failed to mention to my employer that it was a religious holiday because I knew that if I explained that, I would just be ridiculed. So in order to keep my job, I dropped my plans to go home and observe the holiday and I worked instead.

There really was nothing good that could have come out of that situation.
