The Llewellyn Encyclopedia

Term: Seventy

DEFINITIONS

Seventy: In Jewish mystical tradition, the metaphoric number of nations in the world. Each has its own language and presiding angel to be an advocate for the nation before God. The angels will, in parallel with their mortal counterparts, form alliances, conspire, and/or fight one another. At the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, seventy bulls were sacrificed in the Temple for the sake of all the nations.
