Breaking Out

Welcome to Llewellyn's Astro e-newsletter. Hey, what's your Sun sign? Even people who never read a horoscope will ask that question. Astrological forecasts like the horoscopes found in Llewellyn's Sun Sign Book and the weather and economic forecasts in the Moon Sign Book are fun to read and they can be amazingly accurate! Forecasting is not the same as predicting an outcome, though. When an astrologer makes a forecast, he or she is drawing from a vast collection of observations about human behavior and world events from ancient times to present day to identify a trend. To predict, on the other hand, is to say that something very specific will happen. The problem with "predicting," and the reason so many predictions fail, is that they don't take into account an individual's free will.

A natal chart or a chart for the start of an event, like a marriage or the birth of a country, is a map of the sky at the exact time of beginning or birth. An astrologer can gather clues from the chart that are, as I said earlier, amazingly accurate, but they are not scripts for living. You write your own story. As the author of your life, you can also rewrite when your life isn't what you would like it to be.

Poet and sage Maya Angelou said, "We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable." When things are not going as you would like, you might ask yourself the question: what in life is truly inevitable? I came up with a short list: death and change--two words that really mean the same thing. Ms. Angelou offers advice for those of us caught up in the "inevitable" mindset. "It would be wise," she says, "to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends, and living our lives."

Forecasts are fun. They allow us to peek into the future, but perhaps the true function of a forecast is to raise awareness and consciousness. The ability to make choices always follows awareness. Enjoy our forecasts, but find a pen and paper and write your own life script!

An excerpt from the article The Brain and the Mind
by Douglas DeLong

Most people think of the brain and the mind as being one and the same thing. Doctors, scientists and other highly trained persons share this belief. People from all walks of life use the words "brain" and "mind" interchangeably.

In reality, they are two separate and distinct creations. The brain is a biochemical organ — a part of the human body. The mind, on the other hand, is a psychic organ that is attached to the human soul. Both the soul and the mind are connected to the Creator and the heavenly realms.

An excerpt from Cycles of Life
by Rod Suskin

Was life simpler before? We live in a world of so much freedom and choice compared with our ancestors, especially in choosing our beliefs about life, but along with this freedom comes a great deal of uncertainty. While the freedom to pursue and believe our own spiritual truths offers us a great opportunity to find fulfillment, the lack of sureness allows change to surprise us, makes us feel that unlike previous generations we have little certainty of what to expect from life.

Perhaps our ancestors never really had a much simpler time than us; perhaps they knew something about the rhythms of nature and of life itself that made things seem more certain to them.

Predictability does not consign us to the limitations of fate but rather offers us an opportunity to take charge and steer our choices and actions in a direction that will help us fulfill our goals more easily. Ultimately, you will understand the present moment in a way that makes it easier to "live in the now."

Using a simple set of numbers firmly based in the well-established techniques of astrology, you will be able to predict when changes will happen in your life, what they will entail, and what are the best strategies to deal with them. Although some knowledge of astrology will be helpful, you will be able to grasp the method with only the most basic understanding of astrological principles. Should you study astrology further you will be more easily able to grasp the complexities of predictive techniques when you finally get to that exciting stage.
