A Step Forward, A Look Back

Welcome to Llewellyn's Astro e-newsletter. Cosmically speaking, there's been a lot going on in the past few weeks. We've had two eclipses, Mercury retrograde, the Sun entered Aries, and now Pluto is retrograde. Moving forward and looking back seems to be a recurrent theme. It's a useful way to consider many things that come our way.

Looking back: In September 2001, when missile-like planes (Sagittarius) transformed (Pluto) the Twin Towers (symbols of international community and capitalism) into fireballs of destruction (Pluto in Sagittarius), our world community was drastically and forever altered. The shock caused many of us to become galvanized around our fears. The U.S. unleashed a firestorm of "shock and awe" on the enemy in a foreign country (Sagittarius). The reaction has been an escalation in terrorism (Pluto) and movement away from the center toward the extreme by people on all sides of these events.

Moving forward: The Sun entered Aries on March 20, beginning a new solar year and reminding us that after a season of dark (yin), the yin and yang of life are once again balanced, if only for a brief time. Then, on March 29, we experienced a solar eclipse in Aries (the Sun-Moon conjunction). On the same day, Pluto turned retrograde in Sagittarius, another fire sign. So, what will all this fire-sign activity mean on a personal level and, by extension, on the mundane level?

Fire energy pulses, licking the air gently, leaping with great gusto, and shooting sparks with abandon. It also spreads warmth and enthusiasm indiscriminately. The New Moon solar eclipse in cardinal Aries symbolizes a new beginning and the potential for joy as we create anew and move out into the world. The Pluto shift in Sagittarius will remind us to seek the center--the center of our own beliefs and values, and the core beliefs we hold as citizens of this nation or other nations in this brave new world we have ahead of us.

Are you feeling joy? What's your vision for the future? The pulsing fire, with its warmth, energy, enthusiasm, spark, and gusto, is there for each of us to use in positive, life-affirming ways. Recently, on a particularly difficult day, I told someone I felt like a rubber band that was ready to snap. My friend said, "What happens if you let go of one end of a rubber band?" That simple question helped me remember that there are a lot of options and not just one way of being.

"Spirituality in a Modern World"
by Douglas De Long

"Look within, within is the fountain of good..."

--Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor and philosopher (121-180 C.E.)

Our television screens show the continual violence, death and destruction erupting around the modern world. The carnage associated with suicide bombers is thrown into our faces on an almost daily basis. Angry, hate-filled individuals parade innocent victims before video cameras. Fear, paranoia, suspicion and uncertainty grip our society like a helpless fish in an eagle's talons.

Praise for The Sabian Symbols & Astrological Analysis
by Blain Bovee

"A practicing astrologer and teacher, Bovee provides a fascinating analysis of the symbols and their uses in chart interpretation in The Sabian Symbols and Astrological Analysis."

New Age Retailer

"Despite many predictions that the Sabian Symbols "fad" would pass away, the decades only seem to elevate their place in modern astrological practice. A renaissance is currently happening in the field, and Blain Bovee's erudite and eminently practical book is one of its masterpieces. He thinks critically, writes lucidly, and clearly has tested his interpretations in the harsh laboratory of the astrological counselling room. I heartily recommend his work."

An excerpt from Meditation as Spiritual Practice
by Genevieve L. Paulson

Helps in Meditation

Meditation is basically a spiritual practice. To be in meditation is to be in tune with the greater spiritual self, thus the entire practice is one consciously or unconsciously directed to development in spiritual ways. Therefore, it is best if you approach meditation in a positive, spiritual way. You may wish to ask for God's protection before beginning.

Don't be negative with your meditations. If you think you won't get any place with them, you won't. Also, do not expect great things to happen when you are beginning. Just the practice of being in a meditative state can be very beneficial. Let come what comes.

Preparing the Body for Meditation

Intruding thoughts happen to all meditators, beginners and more advanced. Your mind has probably been waiting for such a chance as this to bring these thoughts to your conscious attention. Many people find it very helpful to have a pencil and paper with them when they meditate so they can make notes of these thoughts. That practice will clear the system and make it easier to meditate. Also, you may find that there are things you have forgotten to do or there is some way to see a situation in a new light. If this does not help, focusing on the center of each eyebrow can help calm the mind.

It is better in the beginning to meditate for short time periods. If you feel irritable or nervous after having meditated, you may be bringing too much of the spiritual energy into your body to handle easily. If this happens you should cut your meditation time down or eliminate it altogether until your system adjusts to the vibrations of the higher energy. It is like 220 energy in a 110 body. It can blow fuses—that is, make it difficult to function.

Stretch well before meditation in order to loosen your body. You should also stretch very thoroughly after meditation so that you realign your system.

It is best not to get into any kind of breathing exercises, except simple ones, when you are a beginner. Many breathing exercises are so powerful that they release incredible amounts of energy, which may cause illness, crabbiness, inability to function well in the everyday world, or may release disturbing psychic phenomena. To breathe peacefully and deeply is generally sufficiently in the beginning. If you will do this, you will find that your body adjusts your breathing to what is appropriate for you at the time.
