Sticks in a cup, the NFL,
and Buddha

My Fortune
In Thailand recently, I had the opportunity to practice a new type of divination. I was at the Wat Panan Choeng, an old monastery housing the largest image of Buddha in Thailand. Around the side, there were cups with bamboo sticks in them. You kneel down, make a wish, and shake the cup until a single stick fell out. All the sticks have a number on them. You note the number on your stick and go to a table and tell the person what number was on your stick. They give you a piece of paper with a few paragraphs of text written in Thai.

Luckily I had a guide to interpret my fortune. In short, my health is good, my ego needs checking, and I need to work harder. If I am trying to have a baby (I’m not), it will be a boy. Hmmmm.

We don’t have any divination product like the bamboo sticks I used in Thailand, but we do have some other Eastern forms. See the Decks on Sale below for more information.

The Predictive Powers of the NFL
On a different note, a long-standing divination method recently lost its meaning for me. Since 1936, the Washington Redskins game immediately preceding the Presidential election has correctly predicted the outcome of the election. If the Redskins won, the incumbent would win. If the Redskins lost, the challenger would win. Well, on Sunday. October 31, the Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers, meaning that John Kerry, as the challenger, would win. But he didn’t. Meeting Buddha
In Thailand, I visited many temples. I met and was duly awed by several images of Buddha. The first was the largest Buddha in Thailand, mentioned above. I saw the much smaller but no less impressive Emerald Buddha (made of jade) at Wat Phra Rattanasatsadaram. The Emerald Buddha has three solid gold costumes, one for each season: summer, rainy, and winter. Only the King is allowed to change the costumes. At Wat Pho, I saw the incredible Reclining Buddha. The bottom of his feet are carved and inlaid with mother of pearl with 108 characteristics of the Buddha.

You all get to benefit from my recent fascination with Buddha by receiving 20% Robert Place’s The Buddha Tarot kit. See below for detail.

An excerpt from The Buddha Tarot Companion
by Robert M. Place

Before Siddhartha's birth, Maya had a dream in which she was visited by a white elephant with six tusks. In the dream, the elephant impregnated Maya by piercing her side painlessly with one of his tusks. Ten lunar months later, Siddhartha was born. After his birth, it is said that he immediately stood and a white lotus rose under his feet from which he surveyed the ten directions. He then took seven steps toward each of the cardinal directions, and declared this to be his final birth. In some versions of the story, Suddhodhana and Maya had not yet consummated their marriage when Maya became pregnant. Therefore, Siddhartha's birth, like that of Jesus, was from a virgin. Seven days after Siddhartha's birth, Maya died of joy and ascended to Tusita Heaven. Maya's sister, Mahaprajapati, married Suddhodhana and raised Siddhartha. A short time later, a seer named Asita, a saintly old man from the Himalayas, came to visit the child and confirmed that two possible destinies awaited him. If Siddhartha embraced a worldly life, he would grow to be a chakravartin (literally, a wheel-turner), a great emperor over a unified India. If he embraced asceticism, he would become a world saviora Buddha. Asita was sure that Siddhartha would take the religious path.
