Season's Greetings!

Lisa FinanderHello everyone and Happy Holidays. One of my specialty hats as the new Acquisitions Editor at Llewellyn is in tarot. I am excited to take Barbara Moore's place, but I know I have big shoes to fill. Since Barbara owns some really beautiful shoes, I don't mind. To make the transition easier for all of you, I have put The Gilded Tarot on sale for this issue of Tarot Update. Barbara wrote the book and coordinated this project, and it is one of Llewellyn's most successful decks. The artwork is beautifully opulent making it a perfect holiday gift.

For those of you interested in exploring other areas of divination, The Well Worn Path (written by Raven Grimassi and Stephanie Taylor, with artwork by Mickie Mueller) is a new deck of 40 divination cards that focus on the rituals and teachings of Pagans, Wiccans, and Witches. I chose a card from the deck to represent information I was to pass on for this issue of Tarot Update. Initiation was the card I picked. The image reveals a robed priest and priestess jointly supporting an orb of light with their hands. The priest supports it with his left hand and the priestess supports it with her right. In the moonlight, they have entered a path lined with trees. How appropriate for this time of year when the Celtic New Year begins on November 1st and the Gregorian year ends on December 31st. During this time of year, we celebrate beginnings and endings and the passage between darkness and light. We let go of the old and call in the new. As we reflect over the past year with family and friends, we note the changes that occurred in our lives and the lives of others.

Here is an excerpt describing Initiation:

"As you walk along the moonlit path you are met by two waiting figures. They are a priestess and priest of the Old Ways that were known to your ancestors. In their hands you see a glowing sphere. Here abides the living memory of the Ages, joined with Fairy spirits of the Otherworld. It is the only light now that can guide you down the path that lies ahead."
Ý
I Ching for Beginners is a new book by Mark McElroy. He draws on the wisdom from the Book of Changes bringing clear and modern images and meanings to the hexagrams. The hexagrams are given names such as Having It All, Embracing Your Calling, and Encountering Obstacles. Again, I tossed some coins asking for the message I was to convey. Hexagram 64, Reaching The Goal was what I threw. This is the image McElroy gives to Hexagram 64:

"The empowered person observes a fox making his way over a frozen lake, admires his caution and dedication, and resolves to continue making progress."

For those of us that experience the short days and inclement weather of winter during the holiday season, it signifies a time when our bodies want to hibernate but it is at this same time our social calendars are the most demanding. Pause and examine your true goals for the season, and remember to slow down and listen to the integrity of the ice. Ý Many Blessings to you and your loved ones!

Even in a world where your Aunt Bessie practices feng shui and Madonna talks Cabala, most people scratch their heads when someone mentions the I Ching. "Wait, wait -- don't tell me," they say. "I Ching ... isn't that some kind of root you can smoke to cure your diabetes? No? That weird Eastern religion whose leader got arrested? No? Oh, wait! I know! It's that herbal additive they put in buffet food to make everyone eat less!"

Things are slightly better in the metaphysical community, where most people at least know the I Ching (pronounced eee-ching or yee-zhing, but not eye-ching) is a book of ancient wisdom frequently used for divination. Still, very few people know about the book's origins ... or when or why or how to consult it. And why should they? What relevance could a 3,500-year-old book of Chinese wisdom possibly have in the age of AIDS, Karl Rove and Al Qaeda?

An excerpt from Tarot for All Seasons

Solstice Light Spread
by Christine Jette

In the darkest of seasons, the Yule sun begins to rise a little earlier each day, and all the world seems ready for a change. Use the Solstice Light spread to strengthen your hopes for the future. Plan, make wishes, raise your spirits - knowing that the creative fire of spring is promised to you at Yule.

Set a large red candle in a bowl or cauldron to symbolize the birth of the sun. Green represents life, ever present and renewable, gold for sunlight, and white for the purity of new fallen snow. If you have a specific question in mind, ask it as you shuffle the cards. To begin, shuffle the cards and place them in positions one through six, as shown below.

  • Card 1 - Returning Hope: What are you hopeful about? If this card feels negative to you, it depicts painful issues that will be resolved or healed in the coming year. Remember, all cards show a spectrum of life, from happy to sad, and offer opportunities to learn wisdom.

  • Card 2 - Making Wishes: What does your heart desire? Again, if you don't like the card, it is because it depicts an uncomfortable situation that you wish were different.

  • Card 3 - Seeking Visions: What is your vision for the future? Where do you see yourself next year at this time? Do a three-card timeline reading from chapter 2 if you need to clarify the meaning of position three.

  • Card 4 - Sense of Balance: What will restore balance to your life? If the card feels negative, it is because it shows and area of your life that is out of balance and where you need to focus your efforts to restore order.

  • Card 5 - Goodwill Toward Others: Your expression of love, Yule is the season of giving. In what way can you open your heart to others? If this card makes you uncomfortable, it indicates a situation in need of repair, forgiveness, or making an amend. Note whether card four, your sense of balance, is related to card five, goodwill toward others.

  • Card 6 - Advice: The next step. Planning. The action card. What can you do on the mundane level during the winter months to make your hopes and wishes real?

Look at the cards one through five: your hopes, wishes, vision for the future, sense of balance, and goodwill toward others. What story do they weave together to advise you on your next course of action?

To complete the Yule reading, you can meditate with the cards, write a journal entry, or simply close. Carry a card or two with you during the day to strengthen the connection between you and your vision for the future.
