A New Direction for Tarot Update

In April, I attended the Readers Studio in New York City. For those of you unfamiliar with the Readers Studio, it is an annual event where professional and serious tarot readers get together to learn new skills and deepen existing ones from some of the best tarot experts in the world. Llewellyn co-sponsors the event, along with The Tarot School, co-founded by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone.
Since this was my first time at the Readers Studio, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a group of warm, intelligent, and genuine people from around the globe. Many of the people in attendance not only were professional tarot readers but were tarot teachers too. This got the little wheels spinning inside my head, and I decided I didn't want to wait a whole year to connect with everyone again and hear what they've been up to. Instead, I thought: Wouldn't it be nice to use Tarot Update as a place to stay connected and share ideas, insights, and events for tarot enthusiasts of all levels?
So, here is how I would like to see Tarot Update evolve. It would stay as a bi-monthly newsletter, but the topics would vary depending on what I receive from all of you. Perhaps you have tarot-related events you want others to be aware of, tips or insights you want to share with others, books you would like to see, or questions you want to ask about using tarot cards. I would serve as moderator and determine the appropriateness of the content submitted. Don't worry if you are new to tarot or have only been recently introduced to the cards. This is a place for everyone to learn from each other. If you want to submit something for Tarot Update, email us at tarotupdate@llewellyn.com. Let me know in your email if it is ok for me to post, edit, or include your name in a forthcoming online issue of Tarot Update.
It's a great way for those of us in different time zones and on different schedules to get inspired by each other's genius at our own leisure.
Many thanks to everyone who attended and presented at this year's Readers Studio. Special heartfelt thanks go out to Ruth Ann and Wald whose hard work and dedication to the tarot community is truly a labor of love.
May all your readings be good ones,
—Lisa Finander, Acquisitions Editor - Tarot, Astrology, Divination, Kabbalah, & Shamanism

Remember the good old days when ice cream came in two flavors? When televisions received just three networks? When Henry Ford offered customers any color car they wanted ... as long as they wanted black?
Back then, even buying a Tarot deck was simple. At our local bookstore, Tarot decks came in just one flavor: Rider-Waite. The deck came in just one size: big. And I could have any color box I wanted, as long as it was hot, bright yellow.
Today, we live in a world of options. Ice cream parlors offer a minimum of thirty-one flavors. My DirecTV receives more than two hundred channels in both standard and high definition. When shopping for cars, I can buy from dozens of manufacturers - from Acura to Volvo - in any of several hundred colors.
And yes, these days, even oracles come with options. As anyone even remotely interested in Tarot knows, the lonesome Rider-Waite now has ample company. Tiny bookstores in small towns frequently carry half a dozen decks. My local metaphysical shop stocks more than a dozen. Even here in the buckle of the Bible belt, I have on-demand access to more than fifty unique decks through Borders, Books-a-Million, and Barnes & Noble.
With this variety, though, comes confusion. As Tarot becomes increasingly mainstream, the question I hear most is no longer "Aren't Tarot cards demonic?" Instead, the number one question—the favorite of bewildered first-time buyers and curious students alike—is, "What deck should I buy?"
