Ah, the notorious love spell. It's the first one everyone asks for, and it also happens to be one of the trickiest to accomplish, despite the immense resources available on the topic.
For a good introduction to the ethics of love magic, look at
Silver's Spells for Love by Silver RavenWolf, where she makes two very important points:
1) Love magic is temporary, every relationship goes through phases, and you must think of any magic you do like lighter fluid, it's a catalyst, but the real work of love is still up to you.
2) The best love spells are slow workers. If you're asking the universe for a soul mate, don't expect said soul mate to conveniently appear in time for Valentine's Day. Give it some time. It's worth it.
For starters: Silver suggests that before doing any intense love magic, you take a moment to gauge where you are in your life and what it is that you truly want out of any magic you work. Oftentimes what we think we want ends up being the opposite of what we truly need, so practice some self-reflection before diving in.
Drawing Down Love
Supplies: 1 white rose, 1 pink taper candle, scratch paper, red pen, 1 pink construction paper heart, 1 pink ribbon.
Timing: full moon
Remove the thorns from the rose and place next to your lit candle. Say, "love come calling, to my own self be true." Write down on the scratch paper what you think love is. Re-read. Were you honest? Make any necessary adjustments, then write it again on your pink heart, and place the heart under the candle. Go where you are in view of the moon, and hold the rose out to it, saying
"With this rose I draw to me the love and joy I need from thee." Take a deep breath and read aloud what you have written. Take another deep breath, and say "As I will, so mote it be." Take seven rose petals and place them on the heart, roll securely, and tie with the pink ribbon. Hold the heart up to the moon and say "As the wheel of the year turns, I draw toward me the desires emblazoned upon this heart" and seal the ribbon with some wax from your candle. Put in a safe place, and your magic has begun!
