In Eden City, the elite Godspeakers keep the living Words safe in a glass pyramid known as the Athenaeum, away from the illiterate wordless class. But when seventeen-year-old Tavin Barnes is collecting trash from the Athenaeum, Khaya, the Word of Life, pleads for his help. The Godspeakers want to transfer Khaya’s powers into human-like automatons as part of a plot to invade the rest of the world, and their scheme relies on Khaya’s cooperation. Which she has no intention of giving them.

On the run with the Godspeakers’ minions in pursuit, Tavin and Khaya fight to expose the Godspeakers’ plan. Meanwhile, enemy governments are closing in, trying to take advantage of the chaos caused by Khaya’s escape. If control of the Words falls into the wrong hands, the world will never be the same.
