They married the fifty sons of Aegyptus I, and forty-nine of them murdered their husbands on the wedding night. Their punishment in the underworld is to eternally attempt to fill leaky barrels and jars. Originally, this was part of the festival of Hersephoria, or "dew-gathering," but it was later performed during drought. Maidens with both parents still living or who had not experienced a death in the family for one year carried water-filled jugs covered with tiny punctures. They carried the jugs around the town to sprinkle water and stimulate the rain. If you have a garden and have had a parched summer, grab your watering can or prepare a jug punctured with tiny holes. Fill it, bless it, and sprinkle the contents throughout your property. If you have indoor plants rather than an outdoor garden, perform the same ritual with them. Note: Only perform this ritual during a summer drought. If you had a wet season, you should perform a Sun-based ritual instead. |
