Dark Moon Vigil

The New (Dark) Moon rises around 6:00 am and sets around 6:00 pm. We can't see her in the night sky, but we feel her presence. The Dark Moon is associated with a drawing in of powers and is the ideal time to work with inward-directed energies, including the keeping of vigil. The word vigil comes from a Latin word meaning "awake," and a vigil refers to a period of staying awake to keep watch or pray. Most vigils are kept through the night, often on a high, open spot around a vigil fire. Why keep vigil? You might perform vigil for personal empowerment or to mark a life transition. It's a wonderful way to mark initiation, new status, completion of educational goals, or the taking of a new name or spiritual identity. Keep your Dark Moon vigil at night-her energies will bathe you, even if she isn't directly overhead. Build a small fire, wear magical garb, and keep your tools and craft symbols with you. Stay silent during your vigil and fast throughout the period if you can manage it. As sunrise approaches, carry out a ceremony marking your new name or status. Break your fast, and revel in the keeping of your vigil.
