3 Ways (Yoga Included!) To Shift Your Body Image
by Anna Guest-Jelley & Melanie Klein - October2014

A friend recently asked me how I made the shift towards a more positive body image. And I froze.

Despite writing about this often and thinking about it even more, an answer didn't easily spring to mind. I think that's because it's a monolithic question in a lot of ways, and I've done SO many different things that it's hard to narrow it down.

After shaking off my initial brain freeze, I did the next best thing I could think of: spout off some platitudes—therapy, journaling, blah, blah, blah.

Now, those things aren't blah blah to me—not at all. They're actually two of my most important tools that I use on a regular basis. But they were blah blah to her at the time because I knew she'd heard it all before, and she was struggling. She wanted to hear something different, and I knew I wasn't being as real as I wanted to be.

One More Layer
There were a few other friends in the room, so the conversation continued for a bit without me. I listened to them with one ear and to myself with the other—asking myself, "What has REALLY made a difference to me?"

And then it hit me.

As soon as I could, I jumped back into the conversation and told my friend, "One of the biggest things I did was completely change my environment."

That got her attention.

1. You've collaborated on the new book, Yoga and Body Image. How did you two meet? What inspired the book?

Yoga and Body Image, by Melanie Klein and Anna Guest-Jelley

We met online over three years ago because we were both writing about yoga and body image. At the time, almost no one else was discussing the topic, so we set up a phone call and immediately connected. We knew we needed to work together on a project to broaden the conversation, and the seeds of Yoga and Body Image were planted on that very first call!

2. The book includes twenty-five essays on how yoga has influenced a positive body image from several high-profile yogis, including Alanis Morissette, Seane Corn, Bryan Kest, Rolf Gates, and many others. How did you connect with these individuals? What was it like working with them?

We were very fortunate because so many people support and are excited about this project. We knew many of our contributors directly, but for those we didn't, we knew people who introduced us. We couldn't be more grateful for everyone who shared an essay and helped us along the way to get this message out!

3. Why is the message about yoga's positive benefits on our own self-image so important?

In a world where it's easy to find something to make you feel bad about your body everywhere you turn, we think the practice of yoga can offer an alternative. It's not always taught that way, but we believe deeply in yoga's transformative power, as do our contributors. We're excited to contribute to the conversation about how yoga can be a tool for body acceptance through how it connects you with body and breath.

3. Yoga and Body Image includes essays that touch on many different aspects of life, from making choices to parenting to deciphering the messages we receive from the media. Why do you think yoga's benefits are so far-reaching?

The Philosopher’s Stone Tarot Spread
by Chic Cicero & Sandra Tabatha Cicero

Of the many esoteric subjects studied by ceremonial magicians, alchemy is often considered one of the hardest and most arcane, while the tarot is thought to be one of the most accessible and “hands-on.” Historically the language of alchemy with its inscrutable riddles and metaphors have baffled many students, while the images of the tarot are more direct and often need little explanation. Some may prefer one over the other, but like other elements of the Western Esoteric Tradition, the best way to learn alchemy and tarot is to study these topics together. Golden Dawn Adepts Chic and Sandra Tabatha Cicero here provide the illuminating Philosopher's Stone Tarot Spread.

Jack Roth, co-author of Ghost Soldiers of Gettysburg, describes why we should embrace these experiences, despite anything that science might suggest to the contrary.
