An Interview with Kerri Connor

1. Your new book is Wake, Bake & Meditate. What inspired you to write this book?

There was no one inspiration for this book; rather, there were several that when combined together, brought the idea for this book to life. Most of my inspiration, however, came from sitting outside in my backyard late at night, smoking a bowl and meditating. As I began learning more about myself through my own use of cannabis, I began researching and talking to other people about their use and was surprised to find very few people who used cannabis in a spiritual manner. I spoke with medical and recreational users both and was surprised how much the spiritual aspect was missing. I strongly feel this is an aspect of cannabis with which we need to become far more familiar. And so, Wake, Bake & Meditate was born.

2. Why is cannabis such a powerful spiritual ally?

Cannabis is a powerful spiritual ally because it opens previously locked doors. For generations people have known cannabis to be an entheogen—it breaks down walls and brings us closer to our individual version of deity. It allows us to heal aspects of ourselves by showing us where we need healing. It gives us an objective view of ourselves, allowing us to see our own actions and behaviors in a new light that lets us more easily understand them—particularly negative ones. Once we can understand the things we do, we are better able to change the things we do.

3. Do readers need to be versed in either the practice of meditation or the use of cannabis to perform the practices in the book?

No, they do not. I do cover the basics of meditations and I highly (and always) recommend anyone new to cannabis starts slow and low. (Small doses of lower THC products to learn how their body and mind reacts to it.) New cannabis users normally do not need to consume as much THC to feel effect as regular users due to a build up of tolerance. I also emphasize using a buddy system. That being said, if you are versed in meditation and the use of cannabis, this book is still for you, too. The meditations are designed to help heal yourself and enrich your spirituality by building a personal connection to your deity or higher self. Once you complete the individual meditations, you can move onto the group meditations and share your knowledge and experiences with others. Become a mentor to others who need you.

4. Are there any caveats or precautions that readers need to be aware of before using the meditations in the book?

These meditations help you face your own emotional blockages. You may encounter things about yourself you don't like, and that's ok—it's how we learn and how we change. It's hard to get better if you don't know what's wrong. Working with this book can help you discover where you need to make improvements and changes in your life to be a more complete, happier person.

5. What do you hope readers will take away from Wake, Bake & Meditate?

When we discuss cannabis, we hear about its medical use, and we hear about its recreational use, but what we don't hear about is spiritual use. As Americans, we are just now starting to study cannabis, what it is made of (cannabinoids and terpenes), how it works, and what it can do for us—but for thousands of years, other people have known and used cannabis in many ways beneficial to humans. We are rediscovering what others already knew. For thousands of years, civilizations counted on cannabis as a food, a medicine, a fiber, and an entheogen. In America, instead of learning what other cultures could teach us, our government decided to lie to us and take away this gift from nature due to the racist and ignorant beliefs of some in political offices. With legalization happening in more and more states, more and more people are able to learn and decide if cannabis is beneficial for them.

What I want people to take away from this book is they have a choice, and that choice can completely change their life for the better if they allow it to. You do not have to be lied to nor brainwashed anymore. You can open yourself to the experience and learn to feel such a strong connection with the universe it will not only change your life, it will change how you look at life.
