In Chinese medicine, it is traditional to fast in late summer as preparation for winter. European
traditions hold that fasting during the waning Moon is more effective than fasting during the waxing Moon. Fasting need not mean doing without food altogether, but eating lightly to cleanse the system. The Moon's power can help. One old spell recommends eating only "Moon-colored foods," such as potatoes, cauliflower, bread, and egg whites. What might be more effective is eliminating meat, cheese, white flour, sugar, and alcohol from your diet for a few days, and drinking plenty of water. Gaze on the waning Moon, and think of the coming shift of the tides at the equinox. You are preparing your body and mind for the time of dormancy.
