Everyone has a box of old mismatched buttons from old clothes long forgotten or passed down from aunts and grandmothers. During the Blood Moon, when we reflect on our ancestors, you can use the buttons for magic. On a rainy day, give your kids some paper, glue, and kid-safe scissors. Begin by letting the children explore the buttons by running their fingers through them. Soon they'll ask questions such as: Where did this button come from? You can begin telling them about family history. For example, maybe a button came from grandpa's musty old favorite sweater, or from the dress of crazy Aunt Ellen who loved to dance all the time. Let them visualize who these people were. Next, let them create art with these buttons by gluing them to the paper to make pictures. Or, you can supply string to turn them into jewelry, or you can let them decorate an old cigar box. This magical exercise will give you time to bond and teach children simple visualization techniques.
