In many areas, an abundance of violets (both purple and white) appears to announce the coming of May and its ancient festivities. These flowers have a most magical quality and appearance, and can be used in a variety of ways. Violets are edible, and in Scottish folk tradition violets were boiled in whey and given as a cool and refreshing drink to those suffering from fevers. Herbal practitioners used violets to treat many conditions, including "love-idleness." Women in ancient Scotland used a preparation of violets infused in goat's milk as a beauty cream, and violet petals soaked in white wine was a popular festive drink. Use sprigs of violets to decorate the home, create candied violets as a springtime treat, or float violets in your May Day punch bowl.
