Spring brings tempestuous weather. As the world warms, air and water lash themselves into a frenzy of storms. In some places, this brings nothing worse than thundershowers. In others, tornados may result. Mundane precautions against violent weather are necessary, but all aim at surviving it, not at diverting it. Rune magic is more direct. It is one of the oldest and most powerful magical traditions. The rune algiz looks like a crow's foot pointing up. It grants defense, warding off harm. To use algiz as a shield, carve the rune into wood-for instance, the door of a house, or a wooden fencepost-and paint the carved lines red. The rune should face in the direction from which danger threatens-in the case of storms, usually north, northwest, or west.
