In late August, a silvery early morning mist settles over the hills and along the river of my Appalachian valley. It's a cool, cleansing mist that signals that the season is turning towards autumn. It reminds me that this is a good time to also cleanse any space where we live or do magical work. To do this, obtain a sage and cedar ceremonial smudge stick. Burn the stick according to the instructions. Facing east, begin walking around the room or your home in a clockwise direction. After you return to your starting position, raise the stick to thank the sky, then lower it toward the floor to thank the Earth. Remain in the east-facing position and, using the smudge stick, make the shape of a pentagram or cross in the air to seal your sacred space. End by saying: "North, east, west and south. Good energy in, bad energy out."
