Basil Harvest Ritual

Color of the day:  Black
Incense of the day:  Sage

Basil is one of the most magical and purifying of all herbs. To the Orthodox Christians, basil is among the holiest of plants. A sunny morning in late August is the perfect time to harvest basil. As you cut the basil, say a silent thank you to Mother Earth for sharing this gift with you. As a symbol of gratitude, leave a few stems uncut. When done, rinse the basil in cool water and let it drain. In simple ritual, place one sprig of basil on your altar as an offering to the Goddess and God. Tie the rest of the basil in small bunches to dry. Chop a few of the fresh leaves and toss with sliced tomato and feta cheese. Dress with olive oil and red wine vinegar. Eat slowly; enjoy, and savor the taste of this magical herb.
