Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was a Hawaiian monarch who helped pass the Hawaiian Homes Act, which set aside 200,000 acres of land to be homesteaded by native Hawaiians. We often do not think about the people who were native to the lands that we now live upon. Sometimes the land was less than honorably, if not forcibly, taken from them. Those who lived on the land where we now reside are connected to us as ancestors of place. Today, research the identity of the native peoples of the land where you currently live. Take a few moments in meditation, sitting outside directly upon the land if possible, to consider the chain of events that possibly took place to result in your home being upon that land today. How can you honor those who came before you and were native to the land? |
