The leg that remains on the ground is your base. Feel the strength in your base as you shift your weight to bear down solely on it. Tell yourself: This is my base. Firm, strong, stable. When you feel that your base is strong and steady, slowly lift your other leg and place your foot into a comfortable position against your base leg. Take your time and keep your movements completely under control. Go slow enough that you do not tip or shake, but instead feel the strength in your base leg grow as it accepts the changes and compensates for the movements in your other leg.
