Let’s spend this summer studying The Sun card! Each entry between May and August (8 total) will feature a Sun card from a different deck along with the text the creator wrote for it. It will be interesting to see how so many people see difference aspects of this apparently simple card.

It may be summer, but that isn’t stopping us from thinking about midwinter, just for today. Let’s explore the Sun in the Yuletide Tarot by Kristoffer Hughes and Erin O’Leary Brown

19 – The Sun

Keywords – Vitality, hope, enlightenment.

From the reflected light of the moon the Child now finds its own inherent radiancy and can shine by its own power and light. Look to the frozen lake, a surface of water that is reflecting the sun, this is symbolic of the Moon and its associations with water, but this time the Child in the guise of children, is skating happily over its surface. It is no longer beholden to the illusions of the moon. The Child has successfully integrated the message of the Moon into the experience of the sun. This is a card filled with joy and wonder and the pleasures of human life. The solstice sun rises over the distant mountains, heralding the end of the longest nights and it holds within its light the promise of spring. Joyously the Child appears in a number of guises to celebrate a new dawn and to express its own inner light. This perfect winter picnic is indicative of being lost in a moment of happiness, knowing on some intellectual level that happiness is fleeting, and that what we strive for is contentment. But that comes later, for now, simply celebrate the fact the sun has risen, and a new dawn has arrived both for the world at large and for the journey of the Child.

Divinatory meaning:

Bask in the joyousness of a moment and take time to stop and smell the winter roses, it is ok to be and feel happy and light and a little in love. There is positivity around you and now is the time to make decisions, here in the light of the sun that encompasses the entire world and all who live on its surface. By acknowledging your own inner light, you can be optimistic and positive, you can shine and don’t let anyone tell you to dim your light.

Reversed:

Your light has dimmed ever so slightly, you can still see the happiness around you, but it also feels distant, as if you are not fully in the picture. You have fallen into the trap of not appreciating the light that you shine and that it is valid, you are valid, but do not rely on others to validate you – be confident in your own light.
