An Interview with Margaret Ann Lembo

1. You own a metaphysical shop called The Crystal Garden, and many of your previous books have focused on crystals (such as The Essential Guide to Crystals, Minerals, and Stones). What inspired you to instead focus on aromatherapy in your new book, The Essential Guide to Aromatherapy and Vibrational Healing?

I've been working and playing with essential oils for over thirty years. I took a number of courses on aromatherapy and then became certified by a Naturopathic Doctor. At that time, I started my own private label with very high quality medical grade oils. Using essential oils became a daily practice and soon I created a line of essential oil blends.

My work with essential oils evolved to include energetic ingredients in these synergistic blends. It started with a need for smokeless smudging, because my respiratory system didn't do well in smoke filled rooms during workshops I presented. They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, and this is surely the case with "Smudge in Spray." That first creation was the tipping point, and the rest cascaded into a full-blown Wholesale Division to my business.

I wrote this book to provide an easy reference guide to find out how each oil affects us on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

2. How does aromatherapy work? Can anyone use it?

Aromatherapy works primarily through the olfactory nerve (inhalation), through application directly to the skin with a carrier oil or lotion, and hydrotherapy (baths). Do not ingest essential oils! The olfactory nerve has a direct link to the limbic system of the brain, and the therapeutic effects are very good when used properly. A good way to use an essential oil is to put a few drops of it in a dollop of lotion and apply it to the soles of the feet.

Anyone can use essential oils, though I recommend it for people over the age of 18. It is important to understand the effect of the chosen oils to have a positive therapeutic effect. Some oils are best not used by anyone under the age of 10. Some are photo toxic, which means you could have a darkening of the skin in the area it was used when exposed to sunlight. It is always my general rule to look it up to find out contraindications, and these are listed in The Essential Guide to Aromatherapy and Vibrational Healing under "For Your Safety" in each essential oil's listing.

3. Do we need to have an understanding of energy healing to use aromatherapy?

There is no need for the understanding of energy healing to use aromatherapy, though it is beneficial to understand the energy associated with each oil. There is a need to understand essential oils and how they affect you physically, mentally, and emotionally–and, I must add, spiritually. Real medical-grade oils have hundreds of chemical components that affect us; it is important to look up the qualities of each essential oil before you use it. For example, there are oils that should not be used by someone with low blood pressure (like clary sage and ylang ylang, to name just two oils). It is important to practice essential oil safety for children as well as women during pregnancy and breast feeding.

4. The Essential Guide to Aromatherapy and Vibrational Healing also includes a section on crystals. How are crystals related to vibrational healing?

Crystals and gemstones are included in this book for the purposes of deepening the understanding of the vibratory level of the essential oils. For so many years I have thought in gemstones and color. In fact, my first book, Chakra Awakening, includes aromatherapy to enhance and balance the chakras. From my perspective, and for many who love gemstones, it a natural evolution to add the gemstone element to capture the true essence of the use of aromatherapy.

Let's say someone is drawn to use lavender. Lavender is well known, and actually the most popular of the essential oils. It's calming and soothing, and is beneficial for meditation. It's also perfect to connect with St. Germain and Kuan Yin. And it is also antibacterial, antibiotic, and antidepressant, and has a long list of therapeutic qualities that make it the number one essential oil. Now, translate that into gemstones, and I arrive at this list: amethyst, ametrine, angelite, apophyllite, celestite, charoite, clear quartz, chlorite quartz, green moss agate, and lapis lazuli, to name just a few.

This book also delves into the use of Gemstone Essences in Appendix C. Gemstone essences are excellent additions to aromatic-energetic blends to raise the vibration of the synergy. The gemstone kingdom brings color and geometric vibrational healing to the mix.

5. What do you hope readers will take away from The Essential Guide to Aromatherapy and Vibrational Healing?

I hope that the readers will have the realization of the inter-connectedness of all life. This book provides many other elements to the understanding of essential oils, including Divine Messengers (like archangels and Ascended Masters), animal totem, astrological vibration, chakra association, and affirmations.

Though I've mentioned affirmations last here, it is important to realize that the power of positive thought in association with the use of essential oils and anything in life is truly one of the keys to a happy, healthy, abundant, and love-filled life. All sixty essential oils listed in this book have an affirmation associated with it, a positive statement to help focus on the intention. Our thoughts create reality. Match the positive thought to amplify and increase the good results!
