The Astrology of Lady Gaga
For the past couple years, I’ve been unable to understand just what it was about Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) that drew fans. To me, she seemed overly eccentric, most of her music not my thing, and her outfits just plain odd. That is, until I was introduced to her song “Telephone;” for the past two days I’ve had the song on repeat over and over, at work and at home. Doing some quick math, I’ll bet I’ve now heard this song some 180 times. I kid you not.
So now my attention has turned from distaste to curiosity: what is about this woman that inspires her to dress the way that she does? Where does her confident stage presence come from? I decided to do a little *astrological* research.
According to Wikipedia.org, Lady Gaga was born March 28, 1986 in Yonkers, New York. When doing a natal chart, I used noon for a time of birth, so unfortunately that means that her Ascendant is incorrect.
Her Sun is in Aries, indicating that she wants to be in control of her own destiny and looks to have many great achievements (no surprises there). Her moon is (most likely) in confident Scorpio, meaning that she likely doesn’t need much in the way of reassurances from others. Mars being in Capricorn gives her a strong dedication to work (perhaps that explains two albums in two years?). Saturn in Sagittarius provides a love for new ideas and experiences.
While to me, this is all very explanatory, I do really wish I knew her birth time, so that I would have information about her Ascendant and houses. Birth charts will always interest me, as their parts add up to a unique whole that is replicated in virtually no one else. Do you share some of these astrological qualities? Do you share some of the corresponding traits?
Lady Gaga’s Sun in Aries would make her rebellious and give her a strong desire to stand out in the crowd.
Scorpio moon will also give her a very strong resolve to get things done. Among the signs, Scorpios are one of the most determined and passionate. Her moon in this sign indicates some psychic abilities and that she feels emotions very deeply. The passion, intensity, and strong emotions of Scorpio definitely come through in her music.
Her Part of Fortune (POF) is in the sign of Aquarius, giving her an open mind and an attraction to the unique and unusual. This may explain her over-the-top style and striking taste in fashion. It also may explain why she seemingly has the Midas Touch. All of the music she has released has turned instantly into gold. People with this POF aspect in their chart are often very blessed.
Perhaps what is most interesting is that Gaga’s Part of Fortune in this particular sign suggests her purpose in this lifetime goes deeper than pop stardom as those with a POF in Aquarius are often here to use their gifts to help humanity as a whole.

my husband has sun aries, moon scorpio. his asc is gemini, which i think lightens him considerably. i would guess gaga has pisces somewhere prominent, giving her an artistic bent. libra maybe, too. she’s so feminine and yet not.
@Cindy – Lady Gaga does have some Pisces in her chart. Both Mercury and Jupiter are in this sign. Although, without her time of birth we don’t know what houses in which those planets reside.
@Ericka – We did send a message requesting her birth time, but we think she may prefer to stay a little on the mysterious side. 😉
During an interview on the Fuse music channel, Lady Gaga was asked what her obsessions are. Her reply: Monsters and death. Very Moon-in-Scorpio, but it also reminds me a lot of people I’ve known who have the sun in the 8th house. So that could be a clue as to her birth time.
As Aries rules the head, I believe this also explains why she’s so fond of wearing wigs. It’s a way of changing her look completely and instantly; Aries isn’t known for patience!
At first I thought Lady Gaga was just an “attention whore”, to coin a phrase. But after listening to her lyrics and music; watching her perform in videos; and hearing her speak when interviewed by Barbara Walters, I now see that she is projecting her art constantly. Not only in her song, but in her dress. Every moment seems to be an opportunity to create/ project/ entertain/ act. She seems to live to entertain. I almost wonder if she has a little trouble turning it off in private situations.
I love her. She is this generation’s Madonna.
I’ve given her a 2:30 PM birth time. This gives her a Leo Rising and a Taurus MC. It also places that Sex and Death-obsessed Aries Sun in the 8th with Neptune, the ruler of a Pisces 8th House, conjunct Mars, the ruler of her Aries Sun.
And that makes sense to me as there’s a constant attempt by her to wear masks, wigs, etc, thereby obscuring (Neptune) her identity (Sun) though in grand fashion (Leo Rising). In addition, her name Lady Gaga, a stage name and a character she creates for her LIttle Monsters, echoes this Neptune-Mars influence.
Also, when things started to click for her in 2004-2005, she would have had Secondary Progressed Venus moving over her MC. She also would have had her Progressed Sun perfecting to a conjunction with her Progressed and Natal North Node two to three years later in 2008 and 2009 when she became HUGE.
This also places her Moon at 14 Scorpio opposite her MC and trine her Mercury. She’s often spoken of how she feels her desires and her vices battle (Moon opposition) with her ambition (her MC) and you can see, in her lyrics, how these battles fuel her writing (Mercury).
The Leo Rising makes sense as she definitely strives to make a statement with her appearance. But Leo Risings are also — or can be — incredibly sensitive to people’s perceptions of them. They also tend to wound deeply.
In a recent Vanity Fair article, the only time she sounded truly upset was when she spoke of those who “treated her like shit” before she became famous. In particular one person — an ex-manager who’s currently suing her — who she claims did nothing for her, treated her like nothing, and now is trying to take credit for what SHE’S created brought her to tears.
The hurt in that sounds very Leo Rising to me. (coming from a Leo Rising, trust me)
So, that’s why I go with the 2:30 PM time. :^)
OK…here’s how I delineated This ….and i have rectified charts before…..that were VERY accurate.
The Mayan astrology (Tolkien) goes from SUN up to SUN UP, this means that we read 03~~~27~~~ 1986 instead of 03/28/86 .
…….the reading for her Mayan sign fits midnight to 6am ~TO A TEE ~
She would then be a JAGUAR….1 tone.

this puts her birth time between 0000 – 0600
Put in a birth time of around 1-2pm and you get sun trine ascendant (needs to be seen), ascendant in Leo (look at me! Look at my clothes!), ascendant trine Saturn (I love to work hard!) and Saturn trine Sun (maturity beyond her years). The hard working, level headed, performer – sounds like Gaga.
I just read that if you look at the astrotheme website they say “10:55pm” for her birthtime, which would make her a Sagittarius rising…
BUT for some reason I get this water sign vibe for her rising. She seems more Scorpio, Cancer, or Pisces rising. What makes em narrow it down is what she does in her music videos, on stage, and the lyrics she uses with the type of beats. So it makes me throw out Cancer, even though she has a moon shaped face. I then think about what she did prior to being called “Lady Gaga” and she was a very down to earth performer, she wasn’t as tiny (she looks as though she lost 10lbs when she put out The Fame Monster), and she had this dark intense almost jet black hair & deep penetrating eyes.
This brings me to throw away Pisces. Only left with is Scorpio as a choice for her rising. Scorpios are some of the most secretive of the zodiac. She also loves wearing sexual outfits, having power over men (or being complete dominated), she as a weird obsession with dark stuff (i.e. blood), and her need to wear tons of shades (Scorpios wear a lot of glasses).
Demi Moore is a Scorpio (Sun) and she did that pictures of her naked when she was pregnant, it was such a controversial thing when it happened. Bjork (Sun/Moon in Scorpio) is always wearing some of the most insane outfits, I mean she worn a swan to the Grammy’s one year! Steven Spielberg (Moon in Scorpio) is always doing some of the most amazingly, cutting edge creative films. Eminem (Moon in Scorpio) has been known to be so down right vocal with everything in his music. He gets creative and knows how to draw attention. Sigmund Freud (Scorpio Ascendent) has been known to talk A LOT about sex and is the main reason behind so much as to what Psychology is in study for many students. Prince (Scorpio Ascendent) is small (like Gaga herself) and yet his BIG persona makes him almost seems 6ft tall! He always wears some of the craziest suits and outfits and sings about sex.
The list goes on and on… but I’ve thought about this and this is what makes me think she is a Scorpio Ascendent.

Because of her creepy interesting side which is doubled by her moon in scorpio, strong ambition and magnetic confident eyes in which you can also read that side of privacy which is typical to scorpio ascendants 😀
my sun is in Aries and my moon is in Scorpio also w/ a Leo rising and once i heard about Miss. Gaga i thought she was way over the top w/ her outfits and intense make-up but then, just as yourself, i later noticed how sticky her catchy lyrics were! I’d catch myself humming to the tune i professed to have hated just that morning! I too was interested in her birthchart since i knew she was a fellow Arian. I kinda figured she had a Scorpio moon because of the intense emotion she radiates and evident comfort in sexuality. Hopefully the time of her birth given is correct.

You can look at her chinese animal, fire tiger, for more about her character. Too often we don’t even know who the person is in the first place and this helps flesh out the character a bit.
In Vedic astrology we also divide the zodiac into 27 nakshatras. The descriptions for the moon in a nakshatra is remarkably revealing. You will need to change the zodiac of her chart from tropical to sidereal for this calculation. To do this you can use any vedic astrology program, or simply add the difference in degrees to the position of the moon (this difference is called the ayanamsha. the Lahiri is the most popular). Don’t forget to change the zodiac back when you’re done. Do this for the chart at 00:00am and at 23:59pm noting the possible range in degrees for the moon. There should not be more than three nakshatras that the moon could be in. Usually its 2.
For Lady Gaga the moon could be between 11`46 and 26`24 Libra on this day. The first 9 degrees are thus the 15th nakshatra Swati which ends at 20`00 Libra, and the remaining 6 degrees are the 16th nakshatra Vishakha. So now we need to choose. This will reduce the range of possible ascendants.
Swati makes for a sensitive person with an independent spirit, mental strength, intense devotion, thoroughly engaged in life. An incorrigible pleasure seeker. It is associated with Vayu the god of wind, which suits her situation as a singer. Bruce Lee and Charlie Chaplin had their moon in Swati. Varahamihira says ‘The moon in Swati shows a person of mild and quiet nature who controls his or her passions and desires, is skilled in trade, merciful, able to bear thirst, sweet of speech, and charitable. So strong desires yet able to keep them under wraps.
Vishakha on the other hand shows great psychological turmoil within, infidelity, psychism, a sense of righteousness. Nelson Mandela and Elizabeth Tailor. Varahamihira says ‘The moon in Vishakha makes one jealous of the prosperity of others, stingy, bright in appearance, distinct in speaking, skilled in making money, and inclined to create quarrels between people.
Notably, both are very sensitive signs, but Vishakha seems to be more turbulent, aggressive, Martian in quality (Mandela was a boxer), and less refined and Venusian. We should also note an overlap where psychism is also indicated by the Moon-Ketu conjunction, and the strong Mars, Sun and Jupiter are all sources of tremendous vitality for her.
I’m inclined to choose Vishakha. Vishakha makes for good scholars – and she was a good student – and good leaders. Swati seems just a bit too tame for this monster. With this decision we can rule out a possible 9/15ths of the chart. The remaining 6 degrees allows us the ascendants from 13:30 which makes for Leo, to the end of the day at Sagittarius.
Another point is to look at the general layout of her planets. With most in the eastern hemisphere the person self involved. In the western hemisphere – interested in relationships. Below the horizon this shows a private person who likes to keep out of the lime light, while above is a public figure.
I would expect Lady Gaga to have significant placements in the top left / east & above. Unfortunately again its not so clear cut. She has two groups of planets and they are spread over 6 signs.
The ascendant signifies the body type, which for Lady Gaga does not seem particularly exaggerated in any respect. She doesn’t have the frame for an Aries or a Capricorn. She’s not a plump Cancer or a staunch Taurus. She’s too fine for a Pisces and too shapely for an Aquarius. Her garb is too outrageous for a Libra and she doesn’t have the dignity of a Leo or a Virgo.
This leaves us with a Gemini, the natural stage lover; a tall, vindictive Scorpio; or a Sagittarius. Remember however that we ruled out Gemini by picking Vishakha.
Scorpio or Sagittarius?
Having Saturn in the 1st house would be consistent with her aweful appearance. But then Scorpio also has the malefic Ketu-waning Moon combination. Ketu-moon also suggests unusual sexuality, usually in watery Pisces and particularly in the nakshatra Revati. Here in watery Scorpio is no surprize.
For Scorpio or Sagittarius, both the lords of the 1st house would be strong, in 3rd or 4th houses respectively. Both positions have a malefic body in the 2nd house of speech, making it course and crude. However, for Scorpio asc, the appearance would be sweeter because of the moon and her voice more ugly. But for Sag asc, appearance is loathsome because of Saturn while her voice is the more charged and exalted Mars in the 2nd. Mars is also the lord of the 5th, her creativity, with the exalted Sun and the abundant Venus, linking her creativity with her speech. Note that Michael Jackson also had Saturn in Sagittarius, and there is no clarity on his birth time either.
With Scorpio asc, the placement of the lunar nodes is terrible, but with Sag asc, it is at its best – this shows how the individual will manage their way through lifes ups and downs.
To further collaborate the choice of Sagittarius ascendant, we can look at others with the same planets in signs and houses. For example, the moon in Scorpio in the 12th house is shared with Nelson Mandela and Bruce Lee, which shows a dreamy temperament, melancholic, highly moral, but unhappy. Interest in the occult is very strong. It would be good if I had a Scorpio chart with Moon in the first to cross-reference. I was also not able to find matches with other charts for the other planets. Slowly my spreadsheet will grow and this will get easier in time.
For now I’m quite comfortable with Gaga as a Sag asc. Both Elvis and Oprah are Sag ascendants and America can’t get over them.
Someone suggested an Aquarius rising. It was suggested simply to put her Mars in 10th. I would agree, seeing as how a transitting Pluto superpowers her Mars, and in 10th, leads her to a sudden and drastic rise to fame.
