One of the oldest and most popular Sanskrit mantras. It is based on a verse of the Rig-Veda one of the oldest books in the world. It is also a traditional musical rhythm and has many variations. The original Sanskrit words (usually preceded by om bhur, bhuvah svaha, are: Tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah prachodayat. Dedicated to the Goddess Savitri, is not easily and directly translated. Krishnamurthy gives:
"We meditate upon the radiant Divine Light of that adorable Sun of Spiritual Consciousness; May it awaken our intuitional consciousness."
