Trance mediumship is often misunderstood, and many people have questions about what it is, how it works, and how to develop it. Let's explore how it differs from regular mediumship; dispel some common fears; discover a few surprising facts; and look at the challenges, rewards, and possibilities of developing as a trance medium.
How It's Different from Regular Mediumship Both are ways of bringing love and healing between the two sides of life, but they work in different ways.
Evidential Mediumship
- The medium connects with a significant, recognizable loved one in spirit for a sitter.
- They generally refer to the spirit's presence or comments in the third person (for example, "I have a man here; he says...")
- They're usually in a very light altered state of consciousness and can generally still converse clearly with embodied people.
- They typically remember what was said in the reading, at least for a short time.
- Private readings and public demonstrations are both common in evidential mediumship.
- The primary purpose is to provide evidence that a sitter's loved one in spirit is alive and well.
- Evidence is paramount. Specific detailed validation is essential.
- Messages often reflect the relationship between the spirit person and the sitter and may address the sitter's current circumstances.
- Readings can help sitters deal with grief and feel connected to their loved ones in spirit.
- Sitters may recognize the authenticity of a reading through specific information about their loved ones that the medium could not otherwise have known.
Trance Mediumship
- The medium invites a spirit person to blend with them and speak through them.
- There is a deeper union between the medium and the spirit person.
- The medium speaks in the first person as though they are the spirit person.
- Their voice, speech patterns, and mannerisms may change.
- They enter a deeper altered state of consciousness known as trance.
- They may be unable to communicate clearly with embodied people while in trance.
- They may remember little or nothing of what was communicated during the trance.
- Demonstrations for an audience are more common than private sessions.
- The purpose is to inspire, educate, and uplift, always with the intention of serving the highest good of all.
- The spirit person is more often a spirit guide or another benevolent spirit person rather than a loved one in spirit.
- The focus is on sharing wisdom and insight from the spirit world rather than establishing the identity of the spirit person.
- The medium may recognize the spirit person, but it isn't necessary.
- Evidence and validation are less important. Strong evidence and powerful validation can occur, but they're a bonus rather than a necessity.
- Audience members may recognize the authenticity of a trance demonstration through their own experiences, such as feeling shifts in energy, resonating with the words spoken, or observing changes in the medium's appearance.
Dispelling the Fear Trance mediumship can seem frightening to people who aren't familiar with it. Some common misconceptions contribute to that fear. Let's clear those up!
- Trance mediumship is not possession.
- The spirit person doesn't take over or control the medium.
- The medium consciously and willingly invites a spirit to blend with them.
- Spirit people cannot make mediums do or say anything they don't want to.
- The medium can choose to disconnect from the spirit person at any time.
- They can decide to leave the trance state and return to normal consciousness at any point.
Fun Facts There's more to trance mediumship than many people realize.
- Trance mediums may speak words or even languages they don't consciously know. Trance is a co-creative process. It's normal and acceptable for some of the medium's own words and thoughts to come through, especially during the early stages of development.
- Some trance mediums and their spirit guides invite sitters to ask questions.
- Trance circles and demonstrations can take place online.
- Spirit people may overshadow a medium, superimposing their features over the medium's.
- Overshadowing may affect the appearance of the whole body, not just the face.
- Sitting for trance, even without speaking, can help develop regular mediumship.
- Not every medium chooses to develop trance. Trance mediums aren't "better than" regular mediums. Trance mediumship is an option.
- Some regular mediums spontaneously enter trance without intentionally trying to do so.
- Trance mediumship can take place in darkness, red light, or ordinary room lighting.
- In Spiritualism, trance mediums connect with spirit people who once lived on Earth.
- Connecting with angels, dragons, and beings from other galaxies is channeling, not trance mediumship.
Is Trance Mediumship Easier or Harder to Learn? Both! Trance mediumship has aspects that can make it easier to learn than evidential mediumship and challenges that can make it more difficult.
Why it might be easier:
- Trance mediumship is passive. Trance mediums surrender, move out of the way, and let Spirit do the talking.
- There's no need to interpret messages, provide detailed evidence, or identify the spirit person.
- There's no pressure to meet the expectations of a grieving sitter who desperately wants to connect with a loved one.
- It's experimental, exciting, and can be full of surprises.
Why it might be harder:
- Although trance is passive, it still requires considerable energy, effort, and intention.
- Quieting the mind and getting out of the way can be challenging.
- The learning curve can be considerably longer.
- Trance requires an even higher degree of trust and surrender.
- Feeling safe on a deep, core level is essential.
- There's less of a formula for what to do and what to expect. Each medium's development is unique.
Spirit Guides Spirit guides are central to my understanding of trance mediumship. While some evidential mediums work with spirit guides and others don't, many trance mediums develop close relationships with them. An important aspect of trance mediumship is allowing spirit guides to communicate and share their wisdom.
Here are some of my thoughts about spirit guides.
- Spirit guides are people who once lived on Earth and choose to help us from the other side.
- They guide, support, and encourage us. They don't tell us what to do or make our decisions for us.
- Trance mediums and their spirit guides can form strong, even lifelong, relationships.
- Trance mediums can speak for spirit people they don't know or recognize.
- Some mediums know their guides by name, and some do not.
- A medium may work with many guides.
- Trance mediums and their guides often share similar beliefs, but they don't have to agree on everything.
Ethics and Responsibility Trance mediumship, like regular mediumship and other psychic abilities, can be a powerful tool for healing and personal growth. It also comes with responsibility. Integrity, sincerity, and compassion are essential.
- The core principle of ethics is to do no harm.
- Trance mediums are responsible for everything they say, regardless of who they believe is communicating through them.
- Ethical trance mediumship is always practiced with the intention of serving the highest good of all.
- The purpose of trance is to allow Spirit to speak, heal, educate, and uplift.
- Hurtful or hateful words have no place in ethical trance mediumship.
- Trance mediums should never give medical or legal advice.
- Predictions should be approached with caution or avoided entirely.
