At some point, all tarot readers ask themselves questions about how the tarot works, where does the information come from, and what exactly goes on duringa reading. In his book, The Thoth Companion, Michael Osiris Snuffin suggests that a reading centers on communicating with higher powers, and he provides some ways to strengthen the bond to facilitate that communication.

Michael Osiris Snuffin explains his technique:

Before you start a tarot reading, it is wise to establish a connection with the higher powers with which you will be communicating. This may be accomplished in a number of ways.

The easiest method is to appeal to your Higher Self for guidance. Close your eyes, clear you mind, and silently ask your Higher self for help with interpreting the cards. You do not need to be an Adept to communicate with your Higher Self; know that your Higher Self has heard your appeal and will grant you the guidance you desire.

Another method is to create an energetic connection between the tarot deck, the universe, and yourself. Hold the deck between your palms and close your eyes. As you inhale, draw energy down through your crown chakra and into your heart chakra. If you are unfamiliar with energy work or don’t feel the energy moving through our body, imagine this energy as white light that goes wherever you will it to go. Hold the energy in your heart chakra while you exhale.

With your second inhalation, draw energy up through your feet or your root chakra and place it in your heart chakra. On the third inhalation, take the energy in your heart chakra and direct it down your left arm, through the deck, up your right arm, and back into your heart chakra. On the fourth inhalation, cycle the energy through your body and through the deck. This method may take some practice to master, but it is well worth the effort.

Do you do anything special before a reading in order to establish a connection with either a Higher Power, your deck, or both?
