Medieval Irish sagas give poetic accounts of spirits residing in weapons and armor, of spells used to enchant swords so that demons would speak from them. These stories call upon ancient, pre-Christian Celtic magics and encode elements of ritual through which spirits could be enshrined into objects of power. We will delve into this lore of weapon sorcery from ancient tales, folklore, and archaeology, and we’ll conclude with a demonstration of a reconstructed ritual practice to enchant and awaken an inspirited blade.
