Chiron was first discovered in 1977, when it was thought to be an asteroid. From what I have researched, astronomers were unclear about what they wanted it to be, until they finally decided to refer to it as a minor planet. (The astrologers with whom I associate today still do not consider it to be a planet in the way that Mars or Jupiter are, but that does not diminish its impact in the chart.
