LLEWELLYN'S SPELL-A-DAY

Spell: Birthday of Mother Shipton

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

In this date in 1488, seer Ursula Sontheis (later known as Mother Shipton) was born. Around the same time as Nostradamus, she received prophecies that she set down in verse. Many came true in her lifetime, and some say that her prophecies are still coming true today. Shipton became famous and incurred the ire of important people who were the recipients of unflattering prophecies. Several of her predictions about Cardinal Woolsey came true, and he vowed to have her burnt at the stake. Fortunately, she never was-perhaps kept safe by her popularity. While she did never become quite as famous as her rival Nostradamus, Mother Shipton did predict many things to come, for instance:

Carriages without horses will go,
and accidents fill the world with woe.

And:

When pictures look alive with movements free,
And ships like fishes sail beneath the sea.

Fortunately for us, Mother Shipton's predictions were not always correct. After all, she predicted that the world would end in 1881.
