Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Gardenia When I was a child, as each year drew to a close my Greek grandmother would follow an ancient Byzantine custom of baking a "coin cake." To make such a coin cake, drop a blessed coin into the batter prior to baking your cake. When the cake is cut, whomever receives the coin has good luck during the coming year. Be sure to sterilize your coin before-hand by placing it in boiling water for one minute; you may also wish to wrap it in aluminum foil before adding it to the batter. Tell everyone before you serve the cake that they may find a coin-no one should be surprised. Slice the cake in this manner: The first piece is for the home; the next for the head of house. Thereafter, slices are passed from oldest to youngest. |
