Today the African American community begins the celebration of Kwanzaa. One of this weeklong holiday's principles is unity. The holiday season is a very important time for our communities and families - and friends we love as family, even if they aren't relatives.
Create a unity altar with pictures and mementoes of your loved ones - family, friends, anyone dear to you. You can include pets, too. In the center of the altar, place a white candle. If you don't have images or symbols for everyone, write their names on pieces of paper. If you don't have a white candle on hand, use a decorative bowl, and place a stone or other item in the bowl for each person you wish to include. Speak this chant over the altar: Family, friends, near and far, Love unites our hearts. Keep our bond both true and strong, When we're together or apart. |
