Spell: Homemade Potpourri

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

To celebrate the season, make your own fall potpourri to freshen a room for several months. Begin by thinly slicing one apple and one orange and baking them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper at 250 degrees Fahrenheit until they're dried-it could take up to six hours (alternately, let them sit for several days in a dry place).Turn them over at least once while baking.

Remove from oven, then dust them with cinnamon and nutmeg (or pumpkin pie spice) and allow them to cool. Place them in a decorative jar or bowl with cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and any other items of your choice. You may be able to find cinnamon-scented pine cones at a craft or hobby store. Here's a celebratory chant to welcome the season:

"Longer nights and shorter days,
Feel the sunlight's waning rays.
Welcome autumn, changing leaves,
Hint of winter on the breeze."
