What Will You Do with Your Free Life?

As summer solstice approaches, life is abounding with one of the best-known Sun ingresses into the sign, Cancer. Can you feel the change in the air? I know I can. We welcome in summer with the full moon on June 18th, signifying the culmination of energy, ending another 28-day cycle of evolution. Soon, the new moon in Cancer will be upon us, a time of new beginnings and new projects. However, aside from lunar and seasonal cycles, there is yet another evolution that starts at the moment we are born (perhaps even before we are born) and continues as we grow old—the evolution of the soul.

Astrology is an excellent tool for uncovering where your soul has been, what lessons and challenges your soul has chosen to experience in your current life, and what hidden motivations and desires are buried deep in your psyche. In other words, you can help your soul along its evolutionary path by discovering your signs, your planetary aspects, and the placement of your houses. In his forthcoming book, The Complete Book of Spiritual Astrology, Per Henrik Gulfoss says that “with the personal horoscope, you can go directly into the underlying blueprint of the psyche and understand what is driving a person, how complex fears are formed, and how to work with removing those complexes.” Basically, your astrological chart “shows the tools an incarnated being has to work with.”

So, what will your focus be? What items on the vast menu of life will you choose for ultimate fulfillment? As Dan Wilson, one of my favorite singers and songwriters says, “What you gonna spend your free life on?” Just as much as we feel that our lives are a pre-determined set of arrangements, we are also free to make choices that will impact our spiritual goals. This feeling of pre-determination is understandable in that we have experiences for which we cannot find reason, but that make sense at a later date when we come to realize that we could not have grown spiritually without that particular experience. We can end up feeling like our lives just happen to us—that we are going along with the ebb and flow of what comes. But there is something else at play, working just beneath the surface. Gulfoss describes the soul as having chosen a certain set of experiences before it incarnates into its lifetime. So, while we feel that we are brushed up with the tide and floating through a sea of experiences, they are experiences we have already chosen, making pre-determination and free will a joint venture.

Since many of our choices are subconscious, there are ways that you can help your “present mind” in its awareness of the direction you should go. In The Complete Book of Spiritual Astrology, you can find your own personal enlightenment through the elements of fire, water, earth and air. Of course, you must find out what signs comprise your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. You can achieve this by knowing your exact birth time and examining your own natal chart. Through Gulfoss’s book, you can also master your Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable qualities. Each person has a prominence of elements, qualities, signs, and planets in their chart. You can help steer your life in the direction chosen by your soul by determining what is most prominent in your own chart.

Here are some tips for focusing on what your prominent planets are. On your chart, locate angular houses 1, 4, 7 and 10. Since angular houses are places of forceful energy, these planets will be important in your life path. Also, look at conjunctions. If you have two planets conjoined by 1 or 2 degrees, this signifies prominence. You should look at your Rising Sign as well. Even if you have no planets in, on, or near your Ascendant, figure out what planet rules your Rising Sign. Stelliums are also very telling. A Stellium is comprised of 3 or more conjoined planets.

Take advantage of this new cycle of the summer solstice. Use this time to re-awaken your soul, and think about what choices your soul has made before you were incarnated into your current life. Look to your birth chart to assist with your questions about romance, creativity, and career. Use your free will to ignite the fire inside of you. What will you do with your free life?

When I first came up with the idea of writing the book Spells for Tough Times, I did so because I knew people out there needed help.
