The idea for Foundations of Magic first came to me some years ago when I was standing in the checkout line of my local supermarket. I was amusing myself by looking through a copy of one of the many tabloids on display and was as struck by the number of advertisements for magical pyramid key chains, lucky Irish fairy charms, and similar tawdry-looking fetishes. Many people on the outermost margins of literacy, it seemed, were attempting to use magic to improve their lives; but such ineffectual and superstitious magic it was!
