| In Scotland, Saint John's wort or Alla-Bhuidhe ("noble yellow plant") was one of the most prized of all sacred herbs. It was used to protect against sorcery, evil eye, and death, and also to bring the bearer peace, abundance, prosperity, and growth. It was kept secretly in the bodice of a woman's dress or in the vest of a man's outfit, always under the left arm. The plant was only considered to have power when it was accidentally found.
