Images of ESP

In recent years parapsychologists have conducted extensive research into what Charles Honorton, a pioneering investigator in this area, calls "internal attention states." Honorton and others have shown that ESP can be significantly enhanced if the subject�s mind is free of all distractions and solely focuses on mental images that arise spontaneously from his unconscious.

Their research is being done with "ganzfeld" stimulation (Ganzfeld is a German word meaning "homogenous field.") In a typical experiment, the subject lies down, and the experimenter covers his eyes with halved ping-pong balls. Next the experimenter places earphones over the subject�s head and, the sound of undifferentiated static ("white noise") comes through. The experimenter leaves the room.

Elsewhere another person, called an "agent," directs telepathic signals to the subject, who is describing the mental images he is "seeing." Later those mental images are compared to the ones the agent sent. Parapsychologists have found that the two sets of images are often strikingly similar, suggesting that telepathy has been at work. They also learned that even people who had never had psychic experiences before had no trouble receiving the telepathic signals sent to them.

But scientists doing ganzfeld experiments discovered a strange psychic effect for which they were totally unprepared. It turned out that some subjects were picking up the images BEFORE the agent sent them. In other words, they were not reading somebody else�s mind�they were looking into the future!

As the ganzfeld work has continued, another surprising fact has come to light. People who have participated in repeated experiments get better and better at it�in other words, become more psychic�and their new talents also manifest OUTSIDE the laboratory, in their daily lives.
