Term: Eastern Star

DEFINITION:

An organization allied with Freemasonry that is open to women. Often, the wives and daughters of Freemasons will become involved with the Order of the Eastern Star.

The most famous emblem of the Eastern Star is an inverted five-pointed star, or pentagram. Each point of the star represents:

  • One of the Order's five degrees
  • A virtue such as loyalty or courage
  • One of five heroines of the Bible
