Incense of the day: Geranium Mary worship has always been synonymous with Demeter worship. For instance, Mary's feast days follow the major Eleusinian festivals. In particular, today marks the day when Kore, the virgin goddess, was conceived. Coincidentally, on this same day the holy virgin, Mary, was said to be conceived. An ancient practice is to build a box shrine containing holly, ivy, and an image of Mary called a Milly box. ("Milly" is a doggerel version of "My Lady.") When you offer friends and family a leaf of greenery from the box, they must pay you a coin to receive good luck for the new year. |
