Spell: Ostara Egg Spell

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

Color of the day: Red
Incense of the day: Myrrh

The Spring or Vernal Equinox marks the pagan holiday of Ostara. It is a time of balance and a celebration of the return of springtime. The spring holidays of many cultures celebrate with symbols of birth, growth, and fertility, such as rabbits and eggs. Most cultures gave their goddesses springtime gifts of eggs to ensure fertility and blessings. The yellow of the yolk symbolizes the returning Sun and the white shell represents the purity of the returning Maiden Goddess. Across time and across cultures, people decorated eggs in colors and symbols to reflect newness and freshness. The beautifully and intricately decorated Ukrainian eggs are made by writing eggs with beeswax in a batik or resist method. The dye is applied and the waxed part remains uncolored. Called pysanky, the Ukrainian word for decorated egg, they are prized works of art. Witches can do a magical pysanky by writing or drawing glyphs, runes, and symbols on the eggs and then dyeing them. Focus your intention on writing and decorating a hardboiled egg; use meaningful symbols and then dye it an appropriate color. Focus your wish or desire into the egg. Offer thanks to the Goddess, then eat it mindfully, imagining the new magic filling you like the pure sunlight of the season.
