It happens every day. We're in our car and we see someone crossing a busy street, their eyes glued to their smartphone. Traffic? What traffic? Or we encounter someone riding a bicycle or skateboard (in the middle of the street!) and texting or catching up on Facebook instead of paying attention. How many near misses have you had with these people? Do they ever see anything that's not on that little screen?
It's time to cast a spell. As tempted as you may be, don't yell out the window of your car. Don't gesticulate at the person hypnotized by their device. Instead, slow down, take a deep breath, and visualize the person becoming aware of the world. Send this invocation gently in their direction: "Smartphone user, look up, look up! Please stop texting while you walk. Find a seat where you'll be safer And enjoy your day of text and talk." |
