In our American culture, we seem to have forgotten that it's okay to mourn our losses. Rarely do we see anyone in black as a symbol of mourning, nor do we often see black armbands or other symbols of great loss in someone's life.
If we Pagans wish to mark such a loss, one idea is to make a mourning braid, either in your own hair or out of black cording or fabric. If you choose to do the braid in your hair, you may want to consult a professional for assistance in dyeing a lock of it black without staining your skin or clothing. For a cloth braid, if possible, cut a few strips from a black garment that once belonged to your loved one, or you can purchase and use black cloth or cording. As you braid the pieces together, think about your loss. There is often a threefold path involved. Say whatever you need to, and if you cry, put the tears into the braid. Wear the braid under or over your clothes for as long as you feel is necessary, and be blessed. |
